The essential, parent-friendly guide to raising a healthy child in our increasingly toxic environment.

The second volume in the New York Times bestselling Green This! series, Growing Up Green: Baby and Child Care is a complete guide to raising healthy kids. Environmental activist and children's advocate Deirdre Imus addresses specific issues faced by children in every age group -- from infants to adolescents and beyond. With a focus on preventing rather than treating childhood illnesses, Deirdre concentrates on educating and empowering parents with information such as:

• How to make sure your child is vaccinated safely

• Which plastic bottles and toys are least toxic

• How to lobby for safer school environments and support children's environmental health studies

• Advice from leading "green" pediatricians and nationally recognized doctors such as Mehmet C. Oz, M.D.

Chock-full of research and advice, Growing Up Green makes it easy for you to introduce your child to the "living green" way of life.

I really wanted some good advice, but I was flabbergasted to see Mrs. Imus recommends FORMULA over BREASTMILK. The immune benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for six months and continued breastfeeding for two years more than compensates for the junk mothers are exposed to in their environment (which, by the way, is probably the same stuff a COW will be exposed to, and what exactly does she think cow's milk formula is made with?)

After all, what's safer: mother's milk, with stem cells and immune compliments that is perfectly digestible but perhaps contaminated.... or cow's milk, hard to digest and full of unusual additives and components (read the ingredients in formula sometime; try to pronounce them all correctly), taken from a factory-farmed cow fed a diet of corn (more than like genetically modified corn) and given huge antibiotic doses with depressing regularity?

Even soy-based formulas aren't safe, thanks to the fact that Monsanto's genetically modified soybeans are pretty much the only ones on the market now.

I hope Mrs. Imus enjoys the kickbacks from the formula companies.... because she isn't doing any good for mothers and babies.
Could Have Been Better

I would recommend this book as a good general overview to raising your child green. However with that being said this book is not very well researched and it lacks a much needed index in the back.

I just wanted to include two things that really irked me about this book. 1. On page 92 she refers to a physician as the "Mongolian physician". Why is that even necessary? Upon further research I found out that she ripped that title for the doctor from the May/June 2007 Harvard Magazine article. In the Harvard magazine it states, "Ganmaa Davaasambuu, a Mongolian physician who....", so I guess she found it necessary to include that in her book as well.

2. On page 90 she cites the same study from Havard Magazine but cites the wrong months. The publication is from May-June 2007, not July-August 2007 as she so claims. If this simple citation is wrong, who knows what else she cited in her book are wrong.

She seems like an awesome mom and she's got her heart in the right place, but this book lacks credibility. I would recommend Dr. Alan Greene's books instead.Raising Baby Green: The Earth-Friendly Guide to Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Baby CareFeeding Baby Green: The Earth Friendly Program for Healthy, Safe Nutrition During Pregnancy, Childhood, and Beyond

I hope she updates this book and cleans up her facts because there is a lot Standard American Diet (SAD) parents can learn from this book.
Has flaws

Reviewer: deltaflute,
I've reviewed this book on my blog [...] in three parts.

Pros: encourages asking about vaccines, encourages home remedies as opposed to too many antibiotics, encourages physical activity, encourages being cautious about lead toys

Cons: wants to live a vegan life style (B12 is found in meat only), says microwaves are bad (there is no scientific proof that this is true), does not list foods that you can purchase that are not organic that use very little pesdicide, encourages using a water filter but does not suggest looking at testing records or having your water tested, makes the argument that breast milk leaches toxins but does not say why breast feeding is also beneficial

About the Breastfeeding I AGREE with Deidre...

Since so many women commented on the breastfeeding, I had to share our experience. When I was pregnant with my first son, I loaded up several carts at BabiesRus with all that I thought I needed for my baby. We moved into a big beautiful brand new house and I tried to eat what I thought was healthy. I decided to parent with an attachment parenting approach and breast feed of course! Well my son struggled to breastfeed but I stuck with it and even stayed in bed for 5 weeks until we got it down! I was bleeding, and in pain but I was so proud to do what was best for my baby. Well fast forward and my son developed Autism. No it wasn't soley from breastfeeding. It was a combo of the toxic environment we lived in (new house off-gassing, shiny new plastic baby gear and toys, along with vaccines. However, what set the stage for the autism was my overly toxic body. Parasites and toxins transferred to my son in uetero and continued through my breast milk. Baby number two came before my son's autism, so she was in the same environment and I still had no clue about toxins. We only vaccinated her to 3 months when we discovered my son's autism. I cleaned up and "greened" our home and we switched to an organic all natural unprocessed Specific Carbohydrate Diet. My daughter was developing fine until I started drinking a tea, I bought at a salon because it tasted so good, unaware it was a detox tea. I was still breastfeeding my daughter and within 1 week she lost speech and started regressing into autism. 1 year later with a biomedical approach, special diets, detoxing, antivirals and homeopathy, both of my children recovered from Autism! We want to have another baby, but I am currently detoxing my body, eating an organic vegan diet and preparing my body so that I CAN breastfeed my next child without fear of passing on toxins or parasites. A common argument is that our bodies naturally detoxify themselves. Well that used to be true but damage to our immune system from vaccines along with an overly toxic environment has brought us to a place where our bodies are not able to handle the burdens placed on it. We now have to be proactive in cleaning up our environment, diet and products we use. I absolutely agree with Deidre and any mother who has healed their Autistic children using a biomedical approach will tell you the same! Breastfeeding is best, if your body is in a healthy state, but if it is toxic you will pass those toxins on to your baby.
Disappointed

While Ms. Imus's heart may be in the right place, she is a testament to mainstream ideas that keep real growing up green from happening.
So sad that she is so misinformed about human milk. Looks like the pharms and the physicians have poorly advised her.
I think the misinformation outweighs the good stuff, though she does try in her misguided way.

This is a fabulous book. Easy to read. Great for parents with kids of all ages and for people considering having children or those that care for children. I highly recommend it. It is one of those books you have to buy because you will reference it so often. Great to buy and share with others also!
Dangerous and Misleading Advice

Like many other reviewers, when I started at the beginning of the book I was beyond hopeful, almost amazed. There is some important information in the book, like avoiding certain toxins, but that's where it ends. Following with some good advice, there is seemingly bad advice, and then, worse than bad advice.

The author seems to have an idea that we shouldn't have mercury, like mercury fillings. But then goes on to support or say it's the parents choice to give their infants mercury laden vaccines with over 250 times the mercury allowed by the EPA? There are interesting tidbits, I especially like when she interviews a head doctor at the AAP on their vaccine policy. He says that if they changed their vaccine policy, then people would start to wonder why we were vaccinating poor and unhealthy children in the third world.

If you are looking for green home advice, there is something worthwhile here. Otherwise, prepare for alot of misinformation surrounding dairy, which can be health promoting, fish, which are important for pregnant women, and vaccines, which are deadly.

My Mom bought me this book thinking I would really enjoy it. I must admit, I was looking forward to reading it!

I actually feel like I was being lectured to by a self-righteous, caddy Mom at a playgroup (certainly not a Le Leche League meeting!).

This book seems to have a goal of instilling great fear into parents. After reading it, it would seem that no matter what we do, we are destined to be swimming in toxins. The book offers a lot of specific websites and brand names for "natural" products. That is good to a point, but it ends up feeling like commercials.

I was horrified by the breastfeeding portion. Basically a doctor says that breastfeeding is a "double edged sword" and there are soooo many toxins in an adult woman...blah blah. (what about an adult cow or soybeans grown in the soil of the toxic earth??...not to mention the negative effects of soybeans which are not mentioned at all in this book) The doctor goes on to say that he may be old-fashioned, but he thinks that there is something to be said for the closeness of mother and baby...duh!

I feel like I am more informed than this author...I just don't have all the money in the world to publish a book and preach of my "good deeds" and my wonderful husband. I'm glad the profits go to the Imus Ranch...it is the only redeeming factor and the only thing that keeps me from cringing when I think of supporting such an irresponsible book.
Breastfeeding is Bad?

I never purchased the book, a co-worker brought it in and asked my opinion.

Deirdre Imus pretty much loses credibility with me when she suggests there are better alternatives then breast milk. She's in total defiance of Mother Nature and prefers feeding your child with factory produced substitutes and that's extremely alarming.

I get all that about meat being bad for you but being a slave to Science it's my understanding it was animal fat that led to modern man's development including brain expansion which let to superior intelligence. Isn't it just possible there are benefits to be had from meat that we haven't been informed about?

I know many Asian families that migrated to America and one thing I've noticed is their children tower over their parents. I can't help wonder if the American hamburger / diet had anything to do with that. Most Asians I know that migrated are not big meat eaters, as they prefer fish, rice and vegetables. Their American children however love hamburgers and hot dogs.

It's very important to employ critical thinking skills when you read such one-sided arguments against meats, breast-feeding, etc. Some have political agendas, PETA, Environmentalists, money, etc. That's not to suggest some don't have legitimate arguments.

I will close by stating today's man lives far longer then ever before, so beware of the fear-mongers and their agendas.
