I hadn't really considered an electric mower before but thought this may be the time to give one a try. After reading MANY reviews I decided to buy this mower. I went with the corded model because it was less expensive and I had read it was lighter and easier to push. I am very pleased. My yard is about 1/4 acre, I bought a 100' cord and am able to reach my whole yard. I don't find the cord that much of a problem. Starting is a joy, just pull up on the handle. Changing height adjustment couldn't be easier, one simple lever. Highly recommend.

I bought this from Amazon last Nov 2009 to mulch the fallen leaves on my quarter acre lot as well as to mow the lawn. I got the right size 100 foot extension cord. On first use I went over some protruding tree roots and the blade hacked into the underside. So the roots must've caused the blade to angle up into the deck. I unplugged and used a hack saw to remove the half inch thick and about 10 inches long part of the deck that got sliced and was hanging down. The mower still worked OK so I used it 7 more times this season. Near the end of June 2010 I was cutting in the mulching position and noticed the motor slowing down. So I did what I always did. I pushed down on the handle to lift the front end so the motor could regain speed and then I proceeded. Well this time the circuit breaker tripped at the electrical panel inside. I reset the breaker and made sure I had power at the end of the extension cord. But when I tried to run the mower the motor would not run and the circuit breaker would trip again. I took it to the service center. About 10 days later the service center called and told me that Black & Decker voided my warranty. End of story. So I'll not buy another Black & Decker product since they won't even honor their two year warranty on this mower. I told the service center to go ahead and dispose of the mower for me and thanked them for trying. I've since purchased a Lehr propane powered mower and so far so good with that. I also bought it from [...]. You can check it out at [...]
Electric lawn mower, Back & Decker MM875--GREAT CHOICE

This GREAT buy resulted from using two internet tools. First I used Consumer Reports to narrow my search to the lawmowers that could work for me. I then used Google shopping to find the best source. Amazon had the lowest price WITHOUT shipping or tax. This made it a quick and easy purchase from a trusted source. The mower works great---NO gas to deal with and the motor is quiet. The mower is easy to assemble and adjust. The mulching feature leaves a great looking lawm, without having to deal with disposal.

Better than the Homelite that it replaced

The title says it all. I really like the discharge to the bag on this one and the bottom of the bag stays straight to let the cut grass in. My previous mowers bag humped up over time and blocked the discharge so grass would build up under the machine and not do very good job for me. Only time will tell if the motor holds up better than the Homelite ne did.
Great Mower!

When my husband used this mower for the first time, he actually wished our yard was bigger. He loved the adjustable cutting heights and how smooth it was to handle. He looks for any excuse to mow now. As soon as the grass shows any growth, I know where to find him!!
Good but are engineers lost?

This is a very good mower for a smaller yard.
Taller folk will like the extra length handle.
The motor is geared up over the smaller unit (which I had owned), so it cuts more evenly.
There is one major bad design.
The discharge bag is nice sized, however the opening on the mower (after you pull out the insert) is so small that it will never function.
So if picking up tree droppings, leaves, or grass is a wish - look else where. |
Works very well on some tough terrain

I bought this a month or so ago. My "meadow" back yard had grow quite high and is about 125 cord feet from my nearest outlet. I used a 12 gauge cord (hard to fit) and had no problem with power. B&D says that it will go 100' but they don't say what guage wire they are assuming. Anyway, my back yard has a steep hill througout with lots of rocks and sticks. It handled this just fine. It is much lighter then my old 2-cycle Toro and so it was alot easier to mow the hill. I have used it 3 times now, mulching once, and really like it. I did not find the cord to be a serious issue at all. It's a real plus not to smell like a gas station when I finish or have to put my clothes into the wash afterward. So I save energy in two ways and I have limited air pollution as well. A big plus with oil still leaking in the Gulf; in fact it was this leak that inspired me to restrict my use of petroleum. I expect this to last a long time since it does not have a battery. Easy to recommend this.
Does what it is supposed to do...

Takes a little bit to get used to mowing your lawn if you're used mowing with a gas mower. You just need to remember you're using a cord and you need to know where it is so you don't mow over it. Huge plus is that the mower can be raised/lowered according to the height of your lawn.
pretty good value but..

Price seems good after doing some comparisons for electrics that had good reviews. But it can't handle grass that's very long. Takes twice as long to mow. Blade seems not quite as sharp as i thought it should be. I had a B&D 18" before this that lasted about 14 yrs. This model is 19", but it seems quite a bit heavier for that extra inch. The rubber handle grip has already ripped (i wear gloves) on the left side. Only used the mower about 5 times.
